Motile not Mobile
At a first glance there seem to be many mobile working solutions on the market. In actual fact mobile application providers are offering solutions that do things in completely different ways. Its important to find the right one for your needs.
The mobile applications market is clearly a hot topic in both public and private sectors. Much investment has been made by organisations over the last decade in pursuit of the efficiency savings gained through empowering mobile workers.
The market has undergone a journey, both in terms of the network/device infrastructures and the application propositions available.
Many solutions in the market place today remain based on the first generation "Dumb Mobile" application. These are characterised by the cradle based download of data to a local device with little real time capability. Many high profile failed projects can be identified where the upload synchronization using separate third party interfaces have caused the projects to fail. Indeed in the public sector, the Office of the Deputy Prime Ministers national mobile project NOMAD, published an extensive report with such examples.
The second generation of mobile applications which can be characterised as "Smarter Applications" offered a real time access capability to existing back office systems. These solutions are predicated on mirroring or reflecting the back office system screens on a remote device. Terminal emulation and screen scraping techniques are often employed in an attempt to render the back office screens and functions over a low bandwidth network. In some cases these solutions have delivered some efficiency savings, however, they often suffer from performance and cost issues due to the lack of optimisation.
Third generation mobile applications are "Intelligent Mobile [MOTILE]" solutions. The key with intelligent mobile solutions is the recognition that the worker context for remote workers throws up completely different challenges. This leads to the conclusion that reflecting the back office system design is not the right solution to meet the challenges of mobile and flexible working.
Kirona have developed a suite of Motile foundation products that are wrapped around the generated foundation screens. These are generated for use on any device irrespective of screen size. Real time integration with key back office systems is carried out, with the user interacting via a new intelligent mobile application interface.
The ground breaking efficiency savings published by Kirona's customers can only be achieved through embedding Motile applications into the flexible and mobile working culture.
